Our father was a steadfast physician, surgeon and medical educator. In some five decades of service, his career touched the lives of hundreds of patients, medical students, interns and residents. Be it in the Emergency Room of Boston City Hospital, operating rooms of the Brigham and Womens Hospital (pictured at left) or as a Clinical Instructor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School, his skill with human life was unmatched.
As a young man, I remember traveling with our father weekend mornings to the Boston Hospitals. While sitting in the waiting room, our father conducted patient rounds.
An energetic and young Boston Doctor, he would charge up the stairs of the Nation's first Hospital dedicated to women with focused determination and enthusiasm. As with his patient care, his climb and attention to detail was unmistakable.
Amidst this experience, meeting his fellow Boston doctors was not only a privilege, but an example to follow. During his medical career of over 50 years, Dr. Smith served with hundreds of physicians, residents and interns.
In his time at the Boston Hospital for Women, fellow Boston Doctors he served with included Dr. James Austin, Dr. Thomas Botsford, Dr. Christopher Duncan, Dr. Charles Easterday, Dr. Gregory Kane, Dr. Robert Kistner and Dr. Charles Sheldon. Dr. Smith was trained by Dr. Duncan, eventually assuming Dr. Sheldon's practice. Dr. Austin was a lifelong friend to Dr. Smith, covering for each others practices for many years.
Dr. Jim Austin once wrote of Dr. Smith's medical care as being "exquisite," testimony to his lifelong dedication to the care of his patients.
