Dr. Smith enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944, serving as a Hospital Corpsman from 1944-1946. He attended Ohio State University Reserve Officer Training, graduating from Yale University in 1949. From 1955-1957, he returned to active duty as the Medical Officer on the USS Albany (CA 123), also serving as Cruiser Division Four Medical Officer. The Cruiser was homeported in Boston, Ma.
